Dabbling with Linux Ubuntu (Gutsy)

There is one more PC apart from 28 that we have reformatted. This 29th PC has no licensed OS coming with it so I decided to give this loner a shot with Linux!

I really didn’t run into any difficulty picking a good Linux flavor to use in the midst of a thousand distros. I have heard of Ubuntu and its ease of use, not to mention its jaw-dropping effects that could easily blow Vista away and suddenly be at equal footing with OSX (obvious mac fan here. hehe!) and with two things you’d hate to ignore (1) it’s FREE and downloadable, (2) you can run with hardly any lag on a crappy video card. On this old piece of junk installed is a lowly 32MB NVidia card. Contrary to Vista which is notoriously a powerhog, now look who’s laughing! This Ubuntu box mockingly laughs “BWAHAHAHAHA!”

Third Night

This is the 3rd consecutive night Jayvee and I are staying up late to complete the installations and maintenance checks for all 28 computers in our shop. Frappes don’t work so I might give apples a shot. Unfortunately, there no longer are fruit vendors along the side streets of Leveriza at 2 am so I’m a zombie.

Eyes wide shut

Do toothpicks act as good “tukod” to keep my eyelids up? I’ve already lost count on how long I have been up since last night and now it is early in the morning again around 3 am and I’m still here in our LAN shop reformatting all our 28 PCs just to make sure there is not a single unlicensed piece of software installed in any of our computers.  “Why the long hours?” you may ask.  We got only one CD-ROM drive to install OS on all PCs.  So I have to open each one of them to plug in the CD-ROM drive. It takes around 40 minutes to install OS on a PC and that’s when your installation goes error-free.  If it goes whacko, add some 20 minutes more for each computer.  Good thing, my sister has also been working hard on installing the apps, drivers and updating the OS (she also barely had enough sleep).  Can we do this tomorrow during the day? No.  We both find it difficult to do workstation maintenance when customers crowd the shop. I’d rather stay up and do all these then have a peaceful sleep after than worry about authorities coming in and finding crumbs from bad little pirates trashing our computers.  They’ve been hot on the trail recently so it’s always best to be ready to meet them clean and abiding by the law.

I still got 4 PCs to go.

Breaking my blog hiatus – again.

Sorry, pips. I have been absent for days and days again. If this was a college class, early in the semester, I’d be happily handed a dropping slip for delinquency. Question. Does “dropped” look better than a “5″ on a transcript? I’ve heard people from way back in college that they’d rather have a subject dropped than fail at the end. Perhaps it saves them time and effort. I don’t know.

Anyway’s there’s been a lot going on lately. If you’re that person so intrigued that you’d want to find out what I have been into the past days, read on. Otherwise, you might have to wait till I emerge from another hiatus. Again.

Science Discovery Center @ MoA

There’s this place at the Mall of Asia that I didn’t know existed (points up). My siblings and their jowas tagged Cel and I along. (Cel knew the place pala. Ako lang di nakakaalam. Was I born yesterday??)

Anyway, this Science Discovery Center is a pretty much a cleaner, more hi-tech version of the Science Centrum at Ermita (I’ve never been there also but they say it’s cool. Sadly, they closed it down). It’s major attraction is the planetarium where the movies are almost lifelike. (Yes there’s a new planetarium after the late President Marcos’ planetarium closed down, folks!) There were some pretty good activities to be played too like this VR-like thing where you interact with footballs and parachutes on a screen while you do all your waving and jumping and bending like wacko. We had fun in there but some equipment don’t work anymore (considering it’s new and less than a month old!) and I think they should put more stuff.

Bowery on the road!

Kuya Jay’s been in the US for quite some time now and in just roughly a couple of weeks he’s packing up and heading back home. We had a good a little chat on YM just a few minutes ago and broke the news that he’s finally got me the size-ten $15 Starbury kicks! Now that’s one great perk when your favorite cousin has the V to fly oceans to a country with Steve & Barry shops. Niiiiiice!

Who bags the Pac-stakes?

pacsmall.jpgPacmania is on a roll, but after a pretty much “pac-less” showing in his highly anticipated rematch against Marco Antonio Barrera (pac-less, meaning no knockdowns or knockouts), everybody around 130 and 135 thinks they may just have a chance to stop Manny’s rampage. Who are the headliners itching to bag the hefty Pac payday?

squareONE

Since I deem myself  a Class D blogger (D as in delinquent), I have desperately sought self-help readings to help me jack up my blogging performance, not to mention my “regular” blog hiatus.

Found a good site with a good read though. It’s got the most basic topics about blogging starting with the most basic question “What is a blog?” Hah! Speaking about shoving myself back to square one, I found a place to start!

You may want to check the site out yourself and realize how desperate I am.

Now I am embarrassed.

Here goes…

This is NOT Joomla

Sure, you can blog using Joomla! It’s arguably the best CMS available (Sorry, Drupal). But when it comes to ease of publishing blogs and typing away on a screen that’s not cluttered and pleasant to the eyes, WordPress is tops. Now that’s barely the tip of the iceberg. There’s more to WordPress than the average blogger may think. It’s simple and lightweight but a monster in function. Joomla, on the other hand, is a monster in itself too. There’s so much about it you can load it up. But if you’re solely into blogging, Joomla is complex. It does the job; but if you want to blog quick and simply and still be “in fashion”, WordPress is the way to go. ‘Nuf said.

A night out! Finally!

I needed to get a dip- and I mean literally dip myself.  I pretty much am living a boring day-to-day life these days learning and doing stuff on my computer, building my portfolios and so I need something to straighten my spine up a bit.  I believe my fingers are having enough exercise on mouse-clicks!

Thanks to this happy bunch of people from church who practically set a date to socialize and unwind, we drove to Laguna and hit the pools while the rest ganged up on the videoke machine that ran non-stop from 11pm to 3pm the next day. Talk about a singing marathon with a shifting-schedule!
